Wait … George Clooney Is Defending Free Speech NOW?

George Clooney may be the closest thing we have to Hollywood royalty.

He’s handsome, rich, thoughtful and an Oscar winner to boot. He’s proved his mettle on both sides of the camera and evokes an old-school Hollywood charm that’s impossible to fake.

And Clooney plays the part oh, so well.

George Clooney says “stories are always dangerous to people who peddle in fear” in a moving speech at the #VeniceFilmFestival:

He speaks confidently about Hollywood issues, weighs in on the latest political headlines and, when a previous president appeared too ill to seek a second term, Clooney said so via The New York Times.

Yeah, he’s that kind of an actor.

So when Clooney came out this week and defended Mark Ruffalo from charges of antisemitism, it mattered. If Ruffalo’s career faced any repercussions for his ill-advised comments on the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Clooney likely defused them.

That’s for the good. An ill-informed actor shouldn’t lose work for sharing ill-informed views, even extremely ignorant ones.

So where has Clooney been on the free speech front for the last decade? Silent, that’s where.

Clooney sat on his Hollywood hands while the following went down all around him.

• Sensitivity readers censored classics by Agatha Christie, Ian Fleming and Roald Dahl
• Comedians suffered cancellations, or worse, for telling the “wrong” jokes
• Other comedians self-censored for fear of blowback
• The Twitter Files revealed massive censorship in the digital town hall
• Comedians got blocked by Big Tech censors
• The Biden administration teamed with social media giants to purge “wrongthink”
• Gina Carano got fired for a clumsy plea for tolerance
• Roseanne Barr lost her career for one ugly, racially-charged Tweet

That’s a very partial list.

Oh, and Clooney has yet to defend the countless conservatives who meet in private lest their careers be crushed by “tolerant” Hollywood.

So where was Clooney? Why didn’t he use his celebrity wattage to power dissent on these issues? Did he not have access to a microphone? Couldn’t his agent get The Hollywood Reporter on the horn for an exclusive chat on free speech?

He did nothing of the sort. Until now.

This Hollywood emperor has no clothes, apparently.
