Kimmel Survives Melania Joke, Exposes Free Speech Hypocrisy

These stars got fired for far less, and the Legacy Media stayed mum

Jimmy Kimmel will survive his latest self-inflicted wound.

He’s a comedian, albeit barely, so saying the “wrong” joke shouldn’t be a fireable offense. Even though it essentially was during the worst of the woke revolution.

Still, ABC craves his anti-Trump vitriol more than common decency, so barring unforeseen events Kimmel will stay put … for now.

Others weren’t so lucky.

And, in every case, these unlucky souls didn’t have Hollywood, Inc. by their side, let alone Kimmel or his late-night peers. They stood down instead of defending their speech rights.

Weird, right? It’s almost as if Team Kimmel is full of it. And free speech hypocrisy is a very real thing.

Consider Gina Carano. The “Mandalorian” star got fired for sharing a plea for empathy couched in the early days of the Nazi regime. Tacky? Inelegant? Maybe.

Hateful, cruel or bigoted? Absolutely not.

Disney canned her anyway, and later paid the price for that dismissal after Elon Musk helped her sue the Mouse House. The two parties later settled.

Did Kimmel speak out on her behalf? Did any A-list star? What about her “Mandalorian” co-stars? The answer would be no.

The same went for Roseanne Barr. In 2018, the sitcom pioneer sent a cruel, racially-charged Tweet aimed at former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. Barr quickly apologized, adding she didn’t know that Jarrett was black.

Debatable, of course.

Editor’s Note: It’s a brutal time to be an independent journalist, but it’s never been more necessary given the sorry state of the corporate press. If you’re enjoying Hollywood in Toto, I hope you’ll consider leaving a coin (or two) in our Tip Jar.

What wasn’t debatable? That single, awful tweet didn’t necessarily reflect a larger pattern of bigotry. In fact, comedian Norm Macdonald worked with Barr on “Roseanne” and said she would go out of her way to hire minority women for the show’s writing staff.

Worst. Bigot. Ever.

Yet ABC fired her anyway, took over her signature show and killed off her character.

Did The Hollywood Reporter assail those moves? Did Kimmel? Comic maestro Jerry Seinfeld stood mostly alone in defending Barr.

Barr hasn’t had a traditional Hollywood gig since. She did star in a FOX Nation stand-up special, “Cancel This.” Otherwise, she’s been forced to work outside the Hollywood system.

Carano also endured a Hollywood banishment, although the actress has had discussions with Jon Favreau about a return to the “Star Wars” franchise.

Shane Gillis got the gig of a lifetime in 2019 when “Saturday Night Live” selected him to be part of the show’s comic troupe. Then, some of his Asian jokes resurfaced and Lorne Michaels rescinded the offer.

“SNL” quietly admitted its mistake by later hiring Gillis to host the program. Twice.

Merely joking about Hillary Clinton got TBS in a world of trouble. The network shared a gag on social media in 2016 that compared the former First Lady’s laugh to that of a hyena.

TBS swiftly apologized. Samantha Bee, an alleged comedian whose low-rated late-night show got axed in 2022, responded with, “delete your account.”

Some free speech warrior.

And then there’s rodeo clown Tuffy Gessling. His crime? He put on an Obama mask and asked a crowd if the bull should run into him.

He was instantly attacked as a racist, targeted by the national media and given a lifetime rodeo ban.

Did Kimmel, who was on ABC at the time, rally to his defense? Heck, did anybody?

The answer would be no.

This doesn’t count other Cancel Culture-style banishments, like Kevin Hart being forced to resign as Oscars host for a decade-old bit about gay sons. Or the culture war battle to silence Dave Chappelle after his 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer,” featured trans humor.

Did Kimmel rush to Chappelle’s defense? If he did so, it was quick and hardly consequential.

To be clear, firing a comic for a very bad joke is a lousy precedent. The hypocrisy on full display here is worse.

Did we miss other blatant examples of free speech attacks that got ignored by Legacy Media outlets?
