Why Frank Caliendo’s Trump Take Is Different from the Rest
World-class impressionist is polar opposite of Colbert, 'Saturday Night Live'

Just about anyone can attempt a Donald Trump impression.
Exaggerate. Bloviate. Wave your hands. Maybe even throw in the President’s signature YMCA dance.
But for master impressionist Frank Caliendo, the secret is the opposite approach.
He calls it “Library Trump.”
Instead of going big, Caliendo dials it down—lowering the volume, softening the tone and creating a version of Trump that stands apart from the countless over-the-top impressions flooding pop culture.
And it works. Then again, when doesn’t a Caliendo impression land?

Frank Caliendo Talks Trump Impression on Denver Radio
Caliendo showcased his now-famous “Library Trump” during a recent appearance on “Ryan Schuiling Live,” airing weekdays on 630 KHOW.
The interview offered more than just laughs. Caliendo also opened up about how he balances political comedy without diving into partisanship—a line many comedians struggle to tread.
He’s no stranger to political impressions. Caliendo has spent decades mimicking public figures, including a widely-praised take on George W. Bush.
These days, though, two political figures dominate his act: Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden. And if you think you know which one he favors—guess again.

Comedy Over Politics: Caliendo’s Philosophy
For Caliendo, the goal isn’t political commentary. It’s comedy.
His shows typically open with political impressions to set the tone. After that, he focuses purely on making audiences laugh. There’s a method to his comic madness.
“People who come to see me, they wanna get away from politics,” Caliendo said. “They don’t want to hear what I have to say… I’m not going to try and thrust what I think onto other people.”
It’s a refreshingly neutral approach in a hyper-political comedy landscape—call him the anti-Colbert. It’s also one that resonates with audiences looking for an escape.
Inside ‘Library Trump’ (and Biden, Too)
During the interview, Caliendo demonstrated “Library Trump” with a quieter, more controlled delivery:
“We’ve got the best books, so many books that people haven’t read… they have the biggest words.”
The humor comes not just from the voice, but from the unexpected restraint. Still, Trump isn’t his only Beltway impression.
Caliendo balances his act with a take on Biden, joking:
“He’s the only person I’ve ever seen who listens with his eyes.”
He even compares Biden’s expressions to Walter, the famously grumpy puppet created by Jeff Dunham.
Caliendo also contrasts the two presidents’ styles:
- Trump, he says, is like P. T. Barnum—a showman who invents numbers
- Biden, meanwhile, struggles with them entirely, often circling back to Scranton, Pennsylvania stories “like a drunk auctioneer”
Does Frank Caliendo Get Pushback?
While audiences largely embrace his balanced approach, Caliendo admits he occasionally gets pushback—especially for jokes about Biden.
His response?
He’s not impersonating Biden today, but rather Biden during his presidency—“completely healthy,” he adds with a wink.
Frank Caliendo Denver Shows at Comedy Works South
Fans can catch Caliendo live in Colorado with four shows scheduled April 17–18 at Comedy Works South.
If his radio appearance is any indication, audiences can expect sharp impressions, balanced political humor, and plenty of laughs—without the partisan edge.
The difference wasn’t necessarily because he held opposing political views, but because he approached Trump as a figure to perform with, rather than an object of debate or criticism.
