‘Office’ Star Won’t Show Series to Her Own Kids (Maybe Never)
Mindy Kaling admits why audiences still can't get enough of Dunder-Mifflin
Mindy Kaling played a sizable role in making “The Office” one of the best sitcoms of the modern era.
Kaling co-starred in the ensemble comedy, co-wrote two episodes of the award-winning show and served as an executive producer. Now, she has some regrets about her game-changing contributions.
Kaling told “Good Morning America” the series wouldn’t exist today thanks to changing cultural mores.
“That show is so inappropriate now … the writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now. Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now.”
Kaling, the star of the woke comedy flop “Late Night,” wasn’t done. She admitted she’s not ready to show “The Office” to her children … “maybe never.”
Plenty of TV watchers disagree. The show remains an in-demand series, drawing sizable eyeballs on streaming services.
Kaling explained why “The Office” remains so popular despite her regrets.
“I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”
She isn’t the first “Office” alum to admit the show couldn’t be made as-is today. Oscar nominee Steve Carell similarly said his Michael Scott character is too problematic by modern standards.
“I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know?
“But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today – which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”
“The Office” earned 42 Emmy nominations, including five wins, over its nine-season run. The series spawned the popular podcast “Office Ladies” with co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey.
Series mainstay Brian Baumgartner became a Cameo sensation, earning $1 million from the celebrity platform.
Weird Mindy wrote and directed a lot of the Office episodes.
Most of the characters on that show were awful, but Kelly was awful in specifically “female” ways. She saw herself as being the main character in a romantic comedy. She was “cute” in ways that very quickly became annoying. She glommed on to guys who treated her terribly (like d-bag Ryan) and was awful to guys who treated her well. When a couple of coworkers didn’t come to a party she threw, she tried to sabotage their careers. After Ryan dumped her, she lied and said she was pregnant. It’s no wonder the actress (who wrote many of those scenes herself) doesn’t want her kids to see it!
The person who takes offense where none is intended is a fool. Stop tiptoeing around the perpetually offended. They’re never satisfied and they’re rotten neighbors.
I’ve tried to watch “The Office’ a couple times. It sucked both times; I couldn’t even last 22 minutes.
It’s possible you were trying to watch post-Carell episodes. Once Carell left the show, it went downhill almost immediately. The first half season was pretty funny. But it declined rapidly to unwatchable.
I was scrolling down to post that exact thing!! I REALLY tried to watch it a couple of times and found it too stupid (and I LOVE stupid comedy) and boring! If you’ve ever worked in an office you know that you have to deal with a stupid manager every now and then but usually their incompetence and stupidity gets them PROMOTED out! One indication that confirmed my total lack of attention is my Grandson’s constant watching of it! He was a bright young man until he began to hang out with the skateboard and weeders. Now he’s a paranoid week addict with violent mood swings and overall lack of awareness! It breaks my heart! He LOVES “The Office” and watches any time he’s here and has ACCESS to stream! He can’t afford internet where he “stays” because he and his baby mama have other priorities! So yeah, The Office is stupid that evidently is LOVED by STUPID people!
The office was inappropriate? LOL! I must be old. It’s about the most innocuous show in syndication! Anything “offensive” was presented as wrong, even then. Carell and Kaling fall all over themselves to at once admit that the show was great, was ruined by Woke, and also that Woke is still awesome even though it has (culturally) cancelled their show. Leftists have a strange love affair with self flagellation…

The Office is a great show in its time, but people mostly work remotely today. It doesn’t mean people won’t work in the office again and the office dynamic and politics continues as they were. Human nature isn’t so unchanging. People are so touchy that reality is triggering. They need to get a grip.
