Another R-Rated Comedy Bust? Meet ‘Rolling Loud’
Owen Wilson, Matt Rife can't draw crowd for hip-hop romp

Stand-up comedians are having a moment.
Think Jim Gaffigan, Matt Rife, Nate Bargatze, Shane Gillis, Sebastian Maniscalco and more.
They fill theaters. Arenas. Sometimes even stadiums, in the case of Shane Gillis.
Shane Gillis has officially set two Guinness World Records
Largest audience for a comedian β 73,946 attendees
Most tickets sold for a comedy show by a solo comedian β 77,047 tickets
Heβs in a league of his own. Congrats to Shane on an incredible achievement 👏 https://t.co/5A6c245OwD

What can’t some of them do? Lure us off the couch and into movie theaters.
Bert Kreischer’s “The Machine” crashed and burned in 2023. So did Maniscalco’s “About My Father.” Earlier this year, Bargatze’s “The Breadwinner” failed to build on the superstar’s massive fan base.
Now, it’s Rife’s turn to underwhelm at the box office.
Rife, one of the fastest rising stars in comedy, co-stars in “Rolling Loud.” The film casts Owen Wilson, an R-rated comedy superstar, as a dad who loses his teen son at a massive hip hop concert. Rife’s character tries to help him out, and wackiness ensues.
The film has earned just $684K in theaters since its Oct. 2 release. To be fair, the film is in just under 1,000 theaters, but that’s typically enough to make some coin.
Not here.
It’s currently in 14th place as of Thursday, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Now, it’ll have to compete with several new releases, including “The Social Reckoning,” “Other Mommy” and “Angel and the Badman.”
Expect those modest numbers to drop, and fast.
Rife crushes it on streaming services as well as on stages nationwide. He’s done several for Netflix, including the most recent stand-up event, “Natural Selection.”
He’s performed in films before, but often low budget affairs that got little attention. “Rolling Loud” was supposed to be different.
The film hit theaters with very little fanfare. This Denver-based critic wasn’t even aware of its release until earlier today. No local screenings. No press companies pushing out the news, at least on this end.
Nothing.
Rife posted about it twice over the last week-plus on X.

That didn’t move the needle. Nor did the film’s tepid, at best, reviews. Five out of the seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are rotten. That’s not enough to generate an RT score – fresh or rotten.
The audience score is much higher – 76 percent at the moment.
Rife is already eager to promote his next feature – “The Altruists” coming Nov. 19.
Canβt wait for yall to see this! So happy to be a part of it!

“Rolling Loud” comes on the heels of other R-rated comedy disappointments, like “Super Troopers 3” and “Busboys.” The latter featured stand-up sensation Theo Von.
We still pine for classic R-rated comedies like “Wedding Singers” and “Old School.” The latest crop of comedies vying for classic status just haven’t gotten the job done.
It might be time to admit casting a stand-up comedian in these films won’t fill seats as many might expect.
