Patriotic ‘Young Washington’ Draws Huge Crowd on Nation’s Birthday
Angel Studios and Wonder Project deliver All-American treat, tease sequel

“Young Washington” offered the perfect counter-programming to liberal Hollywood this weekend.
The industry mostly yawned over the country’s 250th birthday. Enter a pair of new film studios to serve those eager to honor July 4 in style.
“Young Washington,” from Angel Studios and Wonder Project, overperformed at the box office this weekend. The film earned $20 million on less than 3,000 screens. It came in second overall on July 4, too.
More major new releases debut on 4,000+ screens.
The film also hit it big with general audiences. They gave the film a 92 percent “fresh” rating, while mainstream liberal critics cuffed the movie at 59 percent “rotten.”
No matter. The film resonated with audiences, offering an adult alternative to summer fare like “Toy Story 5,” “Supergirl” and “Minions and Monsters.”
Those numbers gave Angel Studios its largest-ever three-day opening weekend for a live-action title. It also ranks as its second-biggest opening weekend, behind the animated film “David.”
Now, Angel Studios and Wonder Project have something else in store for us.
“Young Washington” director Jon Erwin announced via Instagram that he’s begun writing a new Revolutionary War film.

“Is there a follow-up on the life of George Washington?” Erwin asks in the video posted this weekend, addressing a common question he’s received about his latest project.
The short answer? Yes. And he’s working on the screenplay right now.
“If you think ‘Young Washington’ is big, wait until you see ‘1776,’” he says, referencing the new film’s impressive battle scenes. “It’s epic in every way. It’s another incredible chapter in this man’s life and legacy.”
