The One Movie Hollywood Would Never, Ever Make
'Citizen Vigilante' shames Europe for going soft on migrant crime, unchecked immigration
Uwe Boll crushed the zeitgeist, if not the box office, this weekend.
The rebel filmmaker unleashed a thriller that speaks to the terrible headlines coming out of Europe. Migrant violence. Soft on crime politicians and judges. Everyday citizens fearing for their safety.
“Citizen Vigilante,” starring “cancelled” actor Armie Hammer in the lead role, follows a man fed up with exploding crime rates tied to new European immigrants.
And he’s doing something about it.
The film opens with a shocking murder, and the bloodshed only intensifies from there.
Boll is no stranger to controversy. He’s literally fought back against his critics and doesn’t shy away from provocative topics. His 2013 film “Assault on Wall Street” applied the vigilante template to corrupt capitalists.
This might be his crowning glory, at least on the incendiary front. How many filmmakers would even bring this subject up in the press, let alone shoot a vigilante thriller on the theme?
That’s rhetorical.
And the timing, sadly, is darn near perfect from a marketing perspective.

And, right on cue, a major Hollywood news outlet dubbed the film “morally bankrupt.”
“Citizen Vigilante” is a film that disguises its exploitation roots behind the pretense of exploring an important topic, even as it proceeds to treat that subject completely inappropriately.
That Variety critic seems angrier about Boll’s film than the shocking headlines flooding out of Europe. That’s the only review, to date, for “Citizen Vigilante” on Rotten Tomatoes.
(Variety didn’t have as much of a problem when the vigilante’s targets were crooked Wall Street types in his 2013 actioner.)
There’s another key element to the film’s rollout.
“Citizen Vigilante” has been banned in Germany, the director’s homeland. The reason? It could inspire vigilante action in real life.
The censorship threat should get Jane Fonda’s attention at the very least. After all, she’s a newly minted Free Speech Warrior™, right?
Right? And Jimmy Kimmel, too, of course.
We’ll wait to see if either stands up for Boll, a fellow artist.

Boll will never win over the critical class. He deserves credit, even for those who hate “Citizen Vigilante” on cinematic grounds, for addressing a crucial issue many refuse to explore.
And, of course, he’ll get no such treatment from the media.
I watch a lot of movies – many genres – this one was kind of “odd” with all the non-action scenes. I think THOSE scenes made the others even MORE dramatic. Everything he did to the perps was justified. In a CIVILIZED world there would be more outrage over the actions of those whom he “applied justice” ! The last part was the best! It revealed the utter INSANITY of islam. If the movie was about him being a Doctor and eradicating CANCER would it have been more clear in its message? SOMETHING needed to be done so SOMEONE did it! It’s no wonder the leftists are so enraged, the movie shows them in all their GLORY!

I rented this movie Saturday night. It is just a bad movie. The main character is unlikeable, and uninteresting. The plot is erratic. The film has a student film quality about it. There are too many scenes of vehicles just driving, the main character walking. There is one scene of the police going up stairs, and we see it over and over again to no point. I had hopes for this movie going in and was disappointed that it was so bad. No one else is going to make a movie on this topic, at least not in the near future, so this movie being poorly made is unfortunate. I would say, don’t waste your time or money on this film. It doesn’t achieve what you want it to achieve. Go back and watch Dirty Harry, if you want to see a movie that addresses crime and policies that destroy a society.

Yes, the film sends a very strong message, which some will frame as anti-immigration but from what I have read that’s not correct as the antihero protagonist clearly at ‘ease’ with non-European women.
You must have slept through all the movies about horrible white men. Off the top of my head. (Even movies not about racism usually have a racist person or two.)

Looks like the movie is just a sign of the (frustrated) times just like Del brought up. In bad times, movies with heroes who have “had enough” always get cranked out. Europe has apparently “had enough” and is ripe for their own vengeance movies.
You’re so desperate for rightwing propaganda films that you’re praising Uwe Boll, one of the worst filmmakers of all time. And what happened to wanting politics to stay out of movies, Christian? Why is it that when a movie has even a little progressive ideology, you scream “keep politics out of entertainment.” Yet when a movie has rightwing ideology, you fawn all over it? Nice double standard. And when are we going to get a movie about horrible white men like Brock Turner or the many many many white mass shooters?
