Denver Critics Can’t Sharpen Oscar Picture

No one film looks primed to dominate at this year’s Academy Awards telecast.

That’s especially true following this weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony and the just-released nominations from the Denver Film Critics Society.

The latter group showered praise on a number of films, including “Vice,” “BlacKkLansman,” “First Reformed” and “Roma.” What’s missing? The sense that one movie is heading for a very big night with Oscar.

“Roma” scooped up four DFCS nominations (including Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film). The drama offers a personal look at how domestic workers embellish the lives of their employers as well as their families.

“Vice,” the unabashedly partisan portrait of Vice President Dick Cheney, earned three DFCS nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams). Star Christian Bale came away with a Golden Globe award Sunday for his stunning transformation into the title character.
