Netflix’s ‘Power of the Dog’ Sweeps Denver Critics Group Honors

Strong showing suggests neo-western could be the film to beat on Oscar night

We haven’t seen a film sweep the Oscars in a while.

It’s even less common for a movie to score the “Big 5” – honors in the most coveted awards of the night.

Think 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs,” which scooped up seven awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Jodie Foster), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Director (Jonathan Demme) and Best Screenplay (Ted Tally).

It’s unlikely we’ll see an Oscar sweep come March, but “The Power of the Dog” crushed the competition with the Denver Film Critics Society. The Colo.-based group gave the Netflix original five wins, including Best Picture and Best Director (Jane Campion).

The film is a heavy favorite to snag serious Oscar nominations on Feb. 8, and the DFCS honors, plus the Golden Globes win, suggest it’s the film to beat at the moment.

The only other 2021 release to nab more than one award? “Dune” which nabbed Best Sci-Fi/Horror and Best F/X.
