Golden Globes Voters Step on Yet Another Rake
Nominations snub podcast giant, predict future for upcoming blockbuster

No one expects “Avatar: Fire and Ash” to belly flop at theaters nationwide.
The first two “Avatar” films raced to the top of the all-time box office chart. Director James Cameron has an unerring knack for stories we’ll pay good money to see, including the first two “Terminator” films, “Aliens,” “True Lies” and “Titanic.”
Yet we don’t know for sure how much money the third film in the “Avatar” series will actually make. And, given the film’s gargantuan budget, it’s unclear if the film will make a profit when the dust settles.
Tell that to Golden Globe voters.
The not-so-august body has taken its fair share of lumps over the decades, often of the self-inflicted variety.
Now, with this morning’s nominations for 2025, the body is set to honor a film for something that hasn’t happened yet.
This year marks the third year of a relatively new Golden Globes category: “Best Cinematic or Box Office Achievement”
And the nominees are:
- “F1”
- “Sinners”
- “Weapons”
- “Wicked: For Good”
- “Zootopia”
- “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”
- “Kpop Demon Hunters”
- “Avatar: Fire & Ash.”
The problem? Two, actually.
First, “KPop Demon Hunters” made less than $25 million in global ticket sales. It was primarily a Netflix release, and a massive one at that.
And, of course, “Fire and Ash” hasn’t made a single penny … yet. The film hits theaters Dec. 19.
Did voters hop in Doc Brown’s time machine, visit 2026 and return in time to submit their votes?
Embarrassing.
Less embarrassing but utterly expected? “The Joe Rogan Experience,” considered the biggest podcast of the modern era, got shut out from another new Globes category – Best Podcast.
The usual suspects got nominations:
- “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard”
- “Call Her Daddy”
- “Good Hang with Amy Poehler”
- “The Mel Robbins Podcast”
- “Smartless”
- “Up First” / NPR
The nominees aren’t aggressively political, although several clearly lean to the Left.
Once again, center-Right voices need not apply to a Hollywood awards gala.
NOTE: The original article misstated the year that the Globes initiated the award for best box office performance.
The “Best Box Office” category sums up Hollywood : just make a profit. Never mind how good the product is.
My interest in their output amounts to 2% of nothing at all.
Go woke, go broke.
“Call Her Daddy” isn’t aggressively political? What an absurd statement!
Found an error in your piece…
The Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement is a Golden Globe Award that was first awarded in 2024 by Golden Globe Foundation.
Updating piece now … thank you for pointing this out.
OMG. Poor Hollywood.
So Toto, what is your prediction for the Avatar box office? Does it hit a billion? Does anyone care about these movies anymore? It looks awful. The other two are awful, yet both made 2 billion.
Technically speaking, they don’t look awful. They look amazing. The visuals are spectacular.
The writing, however, is empty and hollow. You’ll find more meaning and significance in a can of green beans than you will in these movies. They’re just empty calories, with a side lecture on environmentalism throw in.
People will see them for the awesome visuals and forget about the story by time they pull in to their driveways.
It will make serious coin … but less than the last two. It might be dramatic, which is why James Cameron is already hedging on parts 4 and 5.
——-How good is the film “F1”?
David Poland at “The Hot Button” wrote that it was the best movie of the year, to him, back in the June-July-August period.
—-It is on your list of ten best movies of the year, or not?
My Best of 2025 list is coming soon … there’s a very good chance ‘F1’ will be on it!
