Should Conservatives Rally Behind Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy?”

Boxing biopic could use some Red State love (but don't bet on it)

Conservatives spent last week cheering Sydney Sweeney for staring down a woke interviewer.

Oh, how quickly they forget.

Sweeney’s new, Oscar-bait drama “Christy” debuted in roughly 2,000 over the weekend. The Christy Martin biopic earned a pathetic $1.3 million in its opening frame, suggesting it’ll be out of theaters in short order.

Is that any way to treat a culture war heroine?

Just days earlier, Sweeney squared off against a journalist from the far-Left GQ Magazine. The scribe tried to guilt Sweeney into apologizing for her now infamous American Eagle jeans ad.

The spot found the actress teasing the similarities between the words “jeans” and “genes.” The gag? Sweeney won the genetic lottery, the unwritten part of the commercial.

The far-Left raged against both Sweeney and the ad, suggesting it implied White Supremacy run wild. The actress ignored the imbroglio, and it mostly went away.

Mostly.

The GQ scribe hoped to guilt the starlet into apologizing for the campaign.

GQ: “There’s a chance that somebody will get some idea about what you think about certain issues and feel like, I don’t want to see Christy because of that. Do you worry about that?”

SWEENEY: “No.”

GQ: “Is there something that you want to say about the ad itself?”

SWEENEY: “The ad spoke for itself.”

GQ: “The criticism of the content was basically that maybe specifically in this political climate, white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority … I just wanted to give you an opportunity to talk about that specifically.”

SWEENEY: “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

Game. Set. Match. Sweeney. And conservatives on social media rallied behind her comments.

Yet for all the conservative social media love, it didn’t translate into movie ticket sales. Did the film’s marketing team fail? Are audiences bored with boxing biopics?

No matter.

Where are Sweeney’s Red State admirers? Shouldn’t they stand up for the starlet, especially after she stared down the woke mob?

This isn’t a sympathy ploy. “Christy,” a moderately well-reviewed film that deserves awards season consideration, is worth the price of admission. Sweeney’s first meaty performance is a winner, too.

And imagine if “Christy” made a “Rocky”-style comeback? The Right rallied behind the anti-Bud Light campaign following the company’s embrace of trans model Dylan Mulvaney (and out-of-touch comments by a key Bud Light executive).

Why can’t the opposite happen with “Christy?” It’s not a boycott but a “buy-cott,” a way to thank that rare actress who stood up to the woke mind virus.

It’s a tall task.

Films rarely recover from weak opening frames. A notable exception? The 2017 musical “The Greatest Showman.” It opened softly, but enthusiastic word of mouth made it a smash – $471 million in global sales.

“Christy” can’t repeat that film’s remarkable bounce-back story. If conservatives want a bigger seat at the pop culture table, supporting a movie like “Christy” and a star like Sweeney could be the first step.

  1. It is terrible how SydneySweeney was vilified by progressives after making her jeans commercial. I do applaud her for not backing down and her refusal to apologize when she has done nothing wrong. That said, if she makes something I find interesting I will tune in, if not I will pass.

While this movie may have some may have some redeeming characteristics, it is a theme that does not interest me. Obviously, domestic abuse is horrific and I wish we lived in a world where it didn’t exist. That said, there are no shortage of films and tv shows that explore the mistreatment of women by men to the point that you can wonder if it is agenda driven. You certainly don’t see any movies that depict abuse in lesbian relationships but the statistics report that it is more prevalent than in heterosexual relationships. Why is that never depicted in film??? Or male victims of abuse by females. Yes, there is less physical abuse, but psychological abuse perpetuated by women is just as prevalent if not greater than psychological abuse of women by men. Finally, some of us are tired of dark themes. Yes, she does overcome her past, but who wants to watch women treated poorly? Not me, but progressives must love it since they love to depict abuse, infidelity and sexism perpetrated by men against women. Give me a movie where the men are upstanding, treat their women with respect and show loving heterosexual couples any day.

    What do you say Christian?

    1. I can be pretty picky about the movies I watch in my ‘down time,’ so I totally understand. Still, I think when conservatives see someone buck the cultural trend/take a stand/or just show courage in a cowardly industry we should try to rally behind them in some fashion. I’ve spoken to so many artists over the years who are genuinely afraid to share their right-leaning views. But if more did so, they would protect one another from professional repercussions. It’s complicated, no doubt.

  2. doesn’t matter who’s in the movie, Hollywood is still pushing the message. this movie wasn’t about a boxing legend, it was about a lesbian. nobody’s interested, especially if they’re going to downplay Sydney’s greatest assets and turn her into a pseudo-male. I quit giving my money to Hollywood a long time ago and I don’t really care who the actor is that isn’t going to change.

  3. I saw it today. Definitely worth the time if you are a fan of sports movies. Starts a bit slow and veers a bit into lesbian love story territory but ends up as a very personal story. It’s woke but as a sideshow. The main event is sports, and themes we’ve seen in sports movies before. SS carries the film. Thanks, CT, for getting my ass out of the chair today with your post.

  4. I have no idea this movie is a must-see. I am saving my money to watch Running Man, a movie with a male lead who can actually fight and look convincing. Sydney Sweeney needs to star in a movie where she looks good. Christy isn’t it. She got paid so at least she got the bag.

    1. The preview shows Ben Richards in a mixed race relationship. While I don’t have a problem with that per se, it’s almost always a signal that there will be additional woke crap

    2. One of the stupidest things I’ve ever read. You realize female boxing is real and Christy Martin was a real female boxer?

      1. “Sydney Sweeney needs to star in a movie where she looks good. Christy isn’t it. She got paid so at least she got the bag.”

        All completely true.

  5. It’s a lesbian movie. Not judging, just saying the market is limited.

Sweeney has become a good, committed actress, but if she wants to start selling tickets, she needs a mainstream role in a mainstream movie.

  6. Sydney Sweeny is hilariously overhyped. And I find it equally hilarious that either liberals or conservatives always have to cleave to some GREAT hero or heroine to worship. Sydney Sweeny and her irritating vocal fry is a thing I won’t miss, and it seems we will never escape from hero-worship to the point of mass hysteria, for her doing essentially nothing of merit. She was in a commercial the left hated, and the right defended her. It signifies NOTHING. Enjoy your latest icon, lemmings.

    1. 100% agree with you regarding the vocal fry. I find her to be incredibly irritating even though I’m a hardcore Republican.

  7. Why isn’t this movie a hit? Because it is more uninteresting crap from an out of touch Hollywood. Who wants to go see a movie about women beating each other up?

    1. You prefer to beat them yourself?

I’m lazy, and grateful for a helping hand, and I don’t care if it’s a female hand, as long as she knows how to hit.

  8. Isn’t this movie about a leisbian boxer who over comes the evil of being married to a man in order to truly discover herself and become the leisbian she was always meant to be. I think you might be missing the point of the culture war. But yes, the right should once again give up their morals and values in order to support another Hollywood degenerate who said something they agreed with. Maybe if she was so MAGA she would not be doing movies about leisbian boxers.

  9. Would love to support her but have zero interest in a movie featuring a pretty actress made to look ugly in a sports movie about a female boxer I never heard of and have no interest in. Worse yet, a lot of people, especially on the right, don’t think females should participate in boxing, so the movie has a leftist worldview. Good people don’t enjoy seeing women getting beat up.

Nobody asked for this movie. Problem is subject matter. Wouldn’t even watch it for free. Sweeny needs to choose to participate in better material.
