Is ‘Backrooms’ Still in Theaters? Yes (And Here’s Why)

Indie sensation still drawing a crowd, adds new footage to sweeten the deal

When Hollywood looks back at the year 2026, two films will jump to the top of the conversation.

Backrooms” and “Obsession.”

These indie horror hits blew away the competition and made their directors very rich (or rich any moment now).

Both films featured tiny budgets, imaginative storylines and plots that appealed to Gen Z. They didn’t make the most money this year … that honor is currently held by “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and, maybe, “Avengers: Doomsday” once the final tallies are measured.

They still showcased rising directorial stars and stories that tied Internet-based elements with the silver screen. And they didn’t break the budgetary bank.

That’s the most critical lesson.

“Obsession” is still going strong in theaters, and it just moved over to VOD platforms. It’s currently the top-selling title at Prime Video.

“Backrooms” hasn’t jumped from theaters to VOD yet, and those who haven’t seen it are in for something new.

The studio behind the feature, A24, added 16 minutes of new footage to the theatrical version. The new title: “Backrooms: Everything Must Go.”

It’s a sly play on a critical element in the film, a furniture outlet that’s much more than what meets the eye.

The new footage could lure some who couldn’t quite tease out the mysterious plot back to theaters. Or, it’ll give newbies another reason to see what the fuss is all about.

“Backrooms” made nearly $350 million worldwide. The updated version will only add to that tally. The updated film dropped a mere 24 percent last weekend, coming in seventh overall.

The movie first hit theaters on May 29.

It’s a smart marketing strategy. It also suggests this could be the start of a new horror franchise. The story technically began not on movie screens but on 4Chan and Reddit discussions.
