Denver Critics Hail ‘Roma,’ Boost Film’s Momentum
Alfonso Cuaron’s deeply felt homage to his Mexico City roots keeps collecting awards.
Sunday night, Cuaron’s “Roma” earned the Critics Choice honors for Best Picture. Today, the black and white drama scored again with the Denver Film Critics Society.
The Colo.-based group named “Roma,” a film with a brief theatrical run before its Netflix debut, as 2018’s best film. Cuaron earned the group’s Best Director honors while DFCS members named “Roma” the year’s best foreign language film.

Colorado critics otherwise spread the honors around, including two for both “A Quiet Place” (co-winner, Best Sci-Fi/Horror and Best Original Screenplay) and “The Favourite” (Best Actress, Olivia Colman and Best Supporting Actress, Rachel Weisz).

The year’s biggest commercial hits, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther,” came away with Best FX and Best Original Score, respectively.
Last year, DFCS chose “Lady Bird” as the best film of the year, with best acting honors going to Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”). Only Oldman followed up that win with an Oscar statuette.
