Macklemore and M.I.A. – A Tale of Two Free Speech Martyrs

Macklemore is the Legacy Media’s newest hero.

M.I.A., in sharp contrast, is an afterthought.

The chasm between the two cancelled musicians matters. It captures where western culture is toward the end of 2026 and the free speech hypocrisy that drives the online conversation.

Macklemore infamously misused his gig as Ed Sheeran’s opener by turning his set into an anti-Israel screed. That’s not illegal, but it’s a lousy way to thank a superstar for inviting you on his tour.

Reports suggest multiple concert venues demanded Macklemore’s release, and Sheeran begrudgingly obliged.

Sheeran’s own band subsequently quit the tour, along with other musical openers, in support of Mackelmore and his cause. Sheeran himself wept while attempting to mitigate the damage.

It only made matters worse. Never apologize to the woke mob. Ever.

Now, Macklemore is going out on a limited “Free Palestine” tour, starting in Dublin, Ireland. Gee, why would he pick that city (said no one)?

M.I.A. is far less busy at the moment.

The British singer got fired from Kid Cudi’s 2026 tour earlier this year for sharing right-leaning views during her opening set. Her rhetoric proved far less incendiary than anything Macklemore said, but she quickly got the heave=ho.

She also lacks a history of dressing up in racist Jewish attire, unlike Macklemore.

Reminder – Macklemore dressed up as an Orthodox Jew, wearing a massive prosthetic nose at a Seattle show.

She quickly sued the tour on free speech grounds, but the media immediately dropped her story. No other artists rallied to her side, nor did anyone from Kid Cudi’s tour quit in solidarity with the singer.

One singer lost his opening gig act and became a pop culture martyr. The other lost her gig and got swept under the cultural carpet.

The free speech implications are tricky. This wasn’t the government clamping down on speech, and both Kid Cudi and Team Sheeran had the right to cut opening acts that didn’t align with their brands.

Still, the optics aren’t good.

The other factor here is more telling.

Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian posture made him a hero to the cultural Left. He said the “right” things, so progressives (and those too afraid to disagree) flocked to his side. By “cultural Left,” we mean the media, Hollywood and so-called free speech advocates.

Never mind the “genocide” lie or how Gaza dwellers treated the Israelis captured on Oct. 7. Nor how the music industry in toto was virtually silent about the Nova music festival massacre on the same horrific day.

M.I.A., in sharp contrast, was left all alone after her dismissal. No musician quit the tour in solidarity with her ability to speak her mind on tour or otherwise publicly support her.

No major Legacy Media outlets had her back, decrying her banishment.

Western cultural elites rally to support some artists whose speech has been diminished, but not others. This year proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
