Will Celebrities Back Macklemore After ‘Free Palestine’ Dispute?

Here’s betting this free speech fight will play out differently than in the past.

Macklemore just got booted from Ed Sheeran’s current tour after he pushed pro-Palestinian talking points and anti-Israel screeds from the stage.

And it’s wrong.

Free speech matters. Sheeran’s team could have told him to lighten up on the political screeds. That’s not what the audiences are there for, and it’s not his personal brand.

Sheeran still hasn’t weighed in publicly about the dustup.

It’s akin to bringing up abortion, immigration and Climate Change on a blind date. Not illegal. Just not remotely appropriate.

Macklemore could have decided on his own if those terms were acceptable. He’s an employee of the tour, and the rules are dictated from the top down.

Now, here’s where the issue gets interesting.

Macklemore claims that multiple venue owners told the Sheeran tour they can’t play there unless Macklemore is a no-show. True? False? We don’t know yet, but Macklemore claims Robert Kraft, who owns the New England Patriots and runs the Kraft Group behind the Guillette Stadium, bullied other venue owners to oust the rapper.

Kraft is Jewish.

How will Macklemore’s fellow artists react to the news? Will they rally to his side? Decry the attack on free speech?

Or will they be silent?

They were silent when something similar happened to M.I.A. The British singer leans to the Right, and she shared those views while opening for Kid Cudi.

“I’ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter…. I can’t do ‘Illegal,’ though some of you could be in the audience.”

So Kid Cudi cancelled her. M.I.A. is now suing the singer on free speech grounds.

Will Macklemore take Team Sheeran to court? It’s unlikely. The imbroglio has let him share his pro-Palestinian talking points far and wide, sans filter.

The bigger question? Will the same artists who couldn’t raise their voices for M.I.A. suddenly rise up for Macklemore? Here’s betting that the answer is “yes.”
