Faith-Friendly ‘Pendragon Cycle’ Shocks Hollywood

Jeremy Boreing's Christian fantasy saga scores big on Prime Video

“Conservative” art remains in shockingly short supply.

For every project like “What Is a Woman?” or “Police State,” there are hundreds of stories told from a left-leaning perspective.

This Fall, we’ll see more of the latter. Maybe much more.

Meanwhile, an unabashedly faith-friendly project is making major waves on streaming.

“The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin” debuted earlier this year on DailyWire+, earning positive reviews in the process. The saga explores the Arthurian legend coinciding with the rise of Christianity.

It looked and sounded like a mainstream fantasy yarn, with strong production values, impressive effects and sturdy performances.

The recent Leo Awards honored Colin Cunningham, who plays King Vortigern in the series, with its Best Lead Performance in a Dramatic Series honors. Most faith-friendly or right-leaning projects are shut out from awards consideration.

You still had to subscribe to DailyWire+ to experience the seven-part series, adapted from Stephen R. Lawhead’s novels. Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing co-created, co-directed, and executive produced the saga, the ultimate passion project.

The series escaped the Daily Wire paywall a few weeks back, earning serious traction outside the U.S. – think Canada, Ireland, Spain, Poland and the UK.

The show soared to the top spot for those nations’ “Fantasy” TV rankings.

On Sept. 1, Prime Video began streaming the saga stateside, cementing its recent success. “Pendragon Cycle” hit as high as the second overall spot on Prime Video’s show rankings. It’s currently sitting in the fourth slot nine days after its debut.

Boreing, for one, isn’t surprised.

“The audience for conservative filmmaking was never in doubt. People have always wanted stories about great ideas. Inheritance, memory, fidelity. Those are among the oldest subjects in drama, and they happen to be among the deepest conservative concerns. What Pendragon proved is how badly that hunger was being ignored,” Boreing said in an exclusive HiT note.

“Pendragon’s” success raises some key questions. Will we see a second season? Might alternative platforms consider similar projects – smart, faith-driven stories that speak to an underserved audience?

The Blaze has dabbled in original projects, along with The Daily Wire and Wall Street Journal’s Opinion section.

Boreing Media already had plans to bring more original stories to the public. Could a new “Pendragon” series become part of those plans?

  1. I’m a DW subscriber and found it cheesy, cringey in places and boring in others. I stopped midway through. Everyone’s a little too handsome, clean looking for living in pre-medieval Britain. I wanted to like it, but ultimately it was cringe and so I went looking for something about Arthur written for adults and found Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord trilogy, which was balm for my soul. I have since gone on to read The Last Kingdom and Sharpe novels. Most filmed entertainment is garbage anymore. It is sad my DW $ can’t compete yet.

  2. Hey Keith:
    “Judge not, that ye be not judged.

    2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

    3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” – Matthew 7: 1-3

  3. You are a DISGUSTING FALSE CHRISTIAN who thinks a MOVIE ABOUT WITCHCRAFT can be “faith friendly”. You disgust me.

    Exodus 22:18
    Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

    ‘This next bit is from a bible study I wrote and it begs a serious question to you who claim to be “Christian” without ANY proof that Christ has accepted YOU.
    How is it that you think you can follow a church that is not only at odds with the teachings of the apostles but also at odds with the TEACHINGS of JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF and think you are some kind of “Christian”?

    Jesus said…

    John 3:5
    5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

    This is how your “first pope” (lol) told you to achieve the two parts of the new birth.

    THE WATER PART

    Acts 2:38
    38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    THE WATER PART CORRECTLY DONE GUARANTEES THE SPIRIT PART

    Acts 2:4
    4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

    Your failure to obey the first part is the reason you do not have the second part and the reason you will neither see nor enter God’s Kingdom.

    You are the proof that Peter was right because you are not baptized properly, your child violators betrayed Jesus by dropping His Holy Name from their baptism in the 2nd century , which is why He doesn’t give you the “spiritual baptism” without which you will go to hell.

    You know, it would be one thing if you guys were like “Well, I was sprinkled by Catholic priests in the Father Son and Holy Ghost AND I STILL GOT THE HOLY GHOST JUST LIKE THE APOSTLES, SPEAKING IN TONGUES so it doesn’t matter how I was baptized!”

    But you DON’T GET IT THAT WAY so you “heap to yourselves” lying teachers who’ll tell you what you want to hear! You glorify His mother , saints and you turn your mind to stupid stories of 2nd century morons as prophesied.

    2 Timothy 4:3-4
    3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
    4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    Two of those “Fables” are that CLERGY CANNOT MARRY and you cannot eat Meat on Friday. In fact this “tradition” violates Gods word when it comes to Bishops and forbidding ANYONE to marry!

    A Bishop MUST be married, this isn’t a suggestion it’s a COMMANDMENT, which would make your POPE a former “bishop” illegitimate if Pope were a “legitimate” church office in the first place, it is NOT.

    The list of Church offices the GOD designated is here Ephesians 4:11 and the one below which mentions a bishop, POPE is nowhere to be found because it’s made up CRAP.

    1 Timothy 3:1-5
    1 This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

    2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

    3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

    4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

    5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

    God not only tells you that a BISHOP MUST BE MARRIED He is also kind enough to tell you WHY in v5.

    Now maybe you understand why child violators and homosexuals populate the ranks of the “clergy” in Satans’ church!

    “”…Paul Sullins estimated that about 17% of U.S. priests are homosexual while various independent researchers and gay priests themselves frequently estimate the figure closer to 30% to 40%””

    Jesus said “Ye shall know them by their fruit”. Matt 7:16.

    “The Catholic child abuse scandal was globally widespread, spanning decades. Investigations revealed systemic patterns where thousands of priests abused tens of thousands of children. Church leaders routinely concealed crimes, moving offenders from parish to parish rather than reporting them, sparking massive Catholic Church sexual abuse cases globally.”

    NOT A FEW “BAD APPLES” the “fruit” of Catholicism is RAPED CHILDREN WORLDWIDE. Nothing about you is remotely “Christian”.

    Do this, Acts 2:38
    Receive this Acts 2:4
    Or end up here, Revelation 21:8

  4. I was very impressed with the series. Unfortunately, I don’t like the odds for a second season. From what I’m hearing, it cost $50 million to make the first season. That’s a lot of scratch. There are also rumors that the high production costs, along with limited new DW memberships, were a large part of the friction that ultimately led to Jeremy’s split with DW. That’s too bad, because I thought he was the perfect guy to help lead that company in its mission.

  5. It’s a cool show, but if you haven’t read the novels (I haven’t), it’s hard to follow. Everything else is great, but when the actual story is hard to follow, that’s a major problem. I rejoice that it isn’t cheesy, and that it’s doing well, and I hope Jeremy can find a way to make another season. But if that happens, I hope it’ll be easier to understand. Does anyone else feel this way? Maybe I’m clueless. It wouldn’t be the first time! :p
