Golden Globes Voters Step on Yet Another Rake
Nominations snub podcast giant, predict future for upcoming blockbuster

No one expects “Avatar: Fire and Ash” to belly flop at theaters nationwide.
The first two “Avatar” films raced to the top of the all-time box office chart. Director James Cameron has an unerring knack for stories we’ll pay good money to see, including the first two “Terminator” films, “Aliens,” “True Lies” and “Titanic.”
Yet we don’t know for sure how much money the third film in the “Avatar” series will actually make. And, given the film’s gargantuan budget, it’s unclear if the film will make a profit when the dust settles.
Tell that to Golden Globe voters.
The not-so-august body has taken its fair share of lumps over the decades, often of the self-inflicted variety.
Now, with this morning’s nominations for 2025, the body is set to honor a film for something that hasn’t happened yet.
This year marks the debut of a new Golden Globes category: “Best Cinematic or Box Office Achievement”
And the nominees are:
- “F1”
- “Sinners”
- “Weapons”
- “Wicked: For Good”
- “Zootopia”
- “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”
- “Kpop Demon Hunters”
- “Avatar: Fire & Ash.”
The problem? Two, actually.
First, “KPop Demon Hunters” made less than $25 million in global ticket sales. It was primarily a Netflix release, and a massive one at that.
And, of course, “Fire and Ash” hasn’t made a single penny … yet. The film hits theaters Dec. 19.
Did voters hop in Doc Brown’s time machine, visit 2026 and return in time to submit their votes?
Embarrassing.
Less embarrassing but utterly expected? “The Joe Rogan Experience,” considered the biggest podcast of the modern era, got shut out from another new Globes category – Best Podcast.
The usual suspects got nominations:
- “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard”
- “Call Her Daddy”
- “Good Hang with Amy Poehler”
- “The Mel Robbins Podcast”
- “Smartless”
- “Up First” / NPR
The nominees aren’t aggressively political, although several clearly lean to the Left.
Once again, center-Right voices need not apply to a Hollywood awards gala.
So Toto, what is your prediction for the Avatar box office? Does it hit a billion? Does anyone care about these movies anymore? It looks awful. The other two are awful, yet both made 2 billion.
Technically speaking, they don’t look awful. They look amazing. The visuals are spectacular.
The writing, however, is empty and hollow. You’ll find more meaning and significance in a can of green beans than you will in these movies. They’re just empty calories, with a side lecture on environmentalism throw in.
People will see them for the awesome visuals and forget about the story by time they pull in to their driveways.
