‘The View’ Sinks to a New Low … and Then Another

Pam Grier, Rep. James Clyburn utter outrageous claims that go unquestioned

There’s only two ways to endure “The View.”

  • Hate watch to soak in the conspiracy-addled nonsense
  • Laugh along as Whoopi Goldberg and co. embarrass themselves in all-new ways

It’s A. or B. Take your pick.

Both options feel insufficient to the one-two whammy on display this week … and there are still two new broadcasts to air before the weekend kicks in.

Once again, ABC proved it has no shame by not only airing this garbage but not correcting the record in any meaningful way.

First up, Rep. James Clyburn attacked Republicans in the nastiest way possible. The South Carolina Democrat appeared on “The View” to claim, without a scintella of evidence, that the modern GOP is trying to bring back slavery.

“Anything that’s happened before can happen again. (…) They were trying to set up a process that will allow this country to return to what it was in 1876 when the election got thrown into the House of Representatives and they were able to overturn what Abraham Lincoln and the Congress had done successfully getting rid of slavery. That is what they’re attempting to do today. I get sick and tired of hearing people say this ‘it’s never been like this before,’ Yes, it has!”

Outrageous. Offensive. Completely unprofessional. And zero pushback from “The View” hosts.

The very next day, “The View” welcomed screen legend Pam Grier on the program. The “Jackie Brown” star shared a jaw-dropping childhood story of walking past a dead black person hanging from a tree in Columbus, Ohio.

Lynchings were a vile part of America’s racial past, but the practice faded in the early part of the 20th century.

Outkick.com notes the anecdote somehow didn’t make it into the actress’ memoir, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.” The right-leaning site added two sources claiming Grier likely made her story up.

According to the Equal Justice Initiative, there has not been a single lynching documented in the history of Columbus, Ohio. Furthermore, America’s Black Holocaust Museum lists the last documented lynching in Ohio as taking place in 1911.

Newsbusters shed more light on the lie.

Grier was born on May 26, 1949. The Ohio Lynching Victims Memorial documented the last lynching as June 27, 1911 (the victim’s name was not reported). The kicker? It occurred in Cleveland.

Even worse? Sites like BET.com, and Cleveland.com reported Grier’s comments without anything resembling a fact check. The latter was partially written or researched by A.I., yet another sign of journalism’s self-imposed destruction.

“The View” is technically part of the ABC News division.

Editor’s Note: It’s a brutal time to be an independent journalist, but it’s never been more necessary given the sorry state of the corporate press. If you’re enjoying Hollywood in Toto, I hope you’ll consider leaving a coin (or two) in our Tip Jar.
