Left’s Woke Playbook Won’t Work on Sydney Sweeney
Media rages over 'Anyone But You' actress's Republican status, ad campaign
Pound sand.
Simple. Effective. Necessary. It’s what Netflix essentially told employees who complained about a special on its streaming service in 2022.
The title? “The Closer” with Dave Chappelle. Trans activists howled over the comedian’s jokes, and for a while it looked like Netflix would throw him under the Cancel Culture bus.
Instead, the streamer backed its talent. That moment mattered in pop culture, allowing stand-up comedy to flourish once more. It took a while, but now we can tell any joke we wish without fear of cancellation.
Phew.
We’re living through a second period just like it.
American Eagle hired Sydney Sweeney to promote its jeans. She’s young, beautiful and famous, making the call a no-brainer. Just ask Brooke Shields.
In 1980, our world was shattered by this Calvin Klein jeans commercial starring Brooke Shields.
Just kidding, no one batted an eye or cried about eugenics like they are now. pic.twitter.com/Auzw6VkQnJ

Except the spot teases the difference between “jeans” and “genes,” suggesting the actress had won the genetic lottery. Millions of American men agree. Some women, too.
Sane souls got the pun. The Left melted down.
The media even lent gravitas to cries that the spot promoted eugenics and/or White Supremacy. Four years ago, American Eagle would have coughed up a corporate mea culpa.
We are retracting the ad campaign … we will be allies moving forward … America has no tolerance for White Supremacy™.
You know the drill. We all lived through it over the past decade, particularly following the Summer of Love protests after George Floyd’s death.
In a statement posted on American Eagle’s Instagram account on Friday, the retailer said the ad campaign “is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Translation: Pound sand. Sweeney has yet to publicly comment on the matter.
Now, the media is circling back to another part of the Cancel Culture playbook, hoping this one might stick.
The same Legacy Media outlets that fed the Russian collusion hoax, ignored a dementia-addled president and promoted misinformation tied to COVID-19 rushed into action. Multiple outlets revealed that Sweeney is a registered Republican.
Now, we got her!
Set aside the perfectly reasonable thought that we can’t hate the media enough. This time, their tactics won’t work.
It’s not 2020. Mainstream blockbusters like “Superman” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” embrace heartland values. Art house movies such as “Eddington” mock Black Lives Matter and woke theatrics.
Major corporations drop woke storylines, hoping to boost their ratings in the process.
Woke reboots, like “And Just Like That,” have a short shelf life. Others, including “Willow,” couldn’t make it to a second season.
One of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Sylvester Stallone, openly endorsed President Donald Trump late last year.
Calling Sweeney, who hasn’t said a political word in public, a Republican won’t stick.
Why?
It’s not just that woke is on the run. She is young and beautiful and some of her films make money. American Eagle’s stock soared following the ad campaign.
And we’re collectively realizing that the woke mob, while angry and passionate, represents but a sliver of society. They can be ignored. And should be.
Sweeney does have good genes. She also has good luck, hitting stardom just as Cancel Culture heads for the dustbin of history.
Good riddance.
