McConaughey’s ‘Independent’ Plea far from Alright, Alright Alright
Well-intentioned star ignores ominous signs in today's political culture

Matthew McConaughey is no Mark Ruffalo.
Nor is he akin to Sean Penn, Jane Fonda or Javier Bardem. Those are some of Hollywood’s most politically outspoken stars. They throw sharp elbows and use every platform at their disposal to tell us how to vote.
The “Magic Mike” alum is a kinder, gentler presence on the Hollywood scene. And, when he dips a toe in political waters, he does so with humility and grace.
Which is what he just attempted over the weekend.
Independent counts. https://t.co/N9MkKlBuIR

The Oscar winner sent out a plea for Americans to think independently come Nov. 3 – Election Day.
“Independents belong in the fight. Not as a protest, not as a spoiler, but as a real and potential winner on the ballot and considered seriously by us … Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or Democrat, there was an American…
Before there was ever a Republican or a Democrat, there was an American. Our birth certificate is not the Declaration of Compromise; it’s the Declaration of Independence.”
That’s a clever turn of phrase. Heck, it might even make a powerful monologue in a Beltway-themed film. And, when pressed as to their political ideology, many Americans do say they’re either “independent” or lean that way.
Except they don’t vote that way.
Two parties still dominate voting across America. That’s a reality that cannot be ignored.
McConaughey means well. That’s obvious. But one party remains deeply flawed – disorganized and sometimes unable to seal the deal on issues that have sizable support from both parties (voter ID legislation). The other party, in sharp comparison, has lost its way.
Is there a more gentle way of describing Democrats in 2026? Here’s the latest outrage from the once-respectable party.
It is absolutely disgraceful to threaten young Americans for participating in politics and serving their country.

And then there’s the rise of the DSA, a movement that wants to abolish the presidency, the Senate, prisons and more.
So much more.
How does McConaughey’s homespun approach tackle that problem? It doesn’t. It ignores it, pushing reality to the side.
In a perfect world, the actor’s message would be welcome and refreshing. We don’t live in that world, alas. And there’s a country to save.
Useful idiot. Just like the GOPe……Romney, McConnell, Tillis…….a gaggle of fake conservatives that conserved nothing.
At best. More likely, he’s with the Left and his ‘independence’ is just a pose. He does seem to get plenty of Hollywood money when he wants to make a movie.
