How ‘9/11 Remembered’ Got Past Media Gatekeepers
Haunting doc delivers stunning tribute to First Responders, 9/11 heroes
Deborah Flora knew what she was up against.
The veteran producer was eager for people to see her new film, “9/11 Remembered: 25 Years Later.” First, the documentary had to clear a network’s Standards & Practices team.
Those bodies will ask filmmakers to snip a sequence or word to make the material suitable for select audiences.
There’s nothing graphic in “9/11 Remembered,” but the images of planes hitting the World Trade Center triggered a woman on one Standards & Practices squad.
And she said as much.
Flora pushed back. Yes, the film features multiple shots of the hijacked planes crashing into the buildings. It’s like reliving a national nightmare.
We can’t look away, Flora said. Nor should we.
Those images are haunting, horrible and necessary, Flora argued. We can’t forget that awful day. More importantly, the unchecked heroism that followed should never be forgotten.
It’s the argument behind the apolitical “9/11 Remembered.” The film debuted last week on The CW and NewsNation in time for the 25th anniversary of the radical Islamic attacks that took nearly 3,000 lives.
Turns out the Standards & Practices member was in New York at the time of the terrorist attack, and she heard the filmmaker’s rationale for keeping the footage.
Flora’s gentle, but firm pressure won the debate.
The producer shared that exchange during a Sunday screening of the film at the DCSD Legacy Campus Theater in Parker, Colo.

The film features familiar faces – President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Rudy Giulliani, actor Gary Sinise and more. The real stars are the heroes from that day, the First Responders who risked everything to save lives in the wake of the attacks.
Many of those brave souls died along with those trapped in the doomed buildings.
Some on-screen voices lost close family members that day. They refuse to let them be forgotten. That motivated the team behind the documentary, which the creators hope will be distributed to schools nationwide.
“9/11 Remembered” is now streaming at NewsNation and The National News Desk.
